Shane Hopkins surges to first SCCT win on Saturday at Placerville Speedway

Placerville’s own Shane Hopkins withstood numerous restarts to record his first career Elk Grove Ford Sprint Car Challenge Tour victory on Saturday night at Placerville Speedway.

The 2018 SCCT Rookie of the Year piloted the familiar High Sierra Industries No. 21 mount en route to his fourth career triumph on the red clay. His win came during the second round of Western Sprint Tour Speedweek.

The 30-lap Shop Kyle Larson main event was plagued by numerous yellow and red flag periods during the Gold Pan Rampage presented by Marshall.

Things got off to a rough start with Cole Croft getting upside down in turn one. He eventually climbed out of the No. 29 machine and was fortunately okay after the nasty tumble.

The feature never got into a groove but during all the mayhem Hopkins remained calm, cool and collected up front. He executed each restart to perfection and eventually went on to grab the Ed Entz checkered flag for the $4,000 score.

Auburn’s Andy Forsberg started from eighth and made several veteran moves to take over third by lap 16 and then second with 22 circuits complete. He crossed the stripe in second to cap a solid run in the finale.

Colby Copeland put together a strong run in the feature to carve his way from 14^th to third by the conclusion. El Cajon’s Braden Chiaramonte and Modesto’s Tony Gomes rounded out the top five. Gomes had charged from 11^th to second at one point but dropped off the edge and lost positions with eight laps remaining.

Nick Parker, Carson Hammes, Steel Powell, Camden Robustelli and Pit Stop USA Hard Charger Stephen Ingraham completed the top 10.

Bubba Decaires captured the B-main, while Steel Powell claimed the High Sierra Industries Dash. Heat race wins went to Nick Parker, Shane Hopkins and Braden Chiaramonte. Landon Henry earned Fast Time to begin the evening, topping a 28-car field with a lap of 10.486 around the quarter mile.

SCCT Western Sprint Tour Speedweek resumes on Monday at the Douglas County Dirt Track in Roseburg, Oregon.
